What is a blank graphic organizer?

A blank graphic organizer, (also referred to as a BGO), is usually a one-page form with blank areas for the child to fill in related ideas or information regarding assigned topics. BGOs can be used to structure writing and aid in: problem solving, mathematical operations, early reading (phonemic awareness to decoding), vocabulary study, fluency-building, comprehension tasks, planning, studying, brainstorming, and social-behavioral thinking and support, as well as for other academic subjects.

Blank graphic organizers can be used at home, within homeschooling or classroom instruction for any student or individually (per a child’s required learning plan), for organizational, planning, choice-making and academic supports, or on state assessments.*

*Per qualifications, allowability, and when approved by an IEP or ARD committee (within special education) or by a Section 504 committee to be included in a child’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or IAP (Individualized Accommodation Plan)

It is important to note that any blank graphic organizer can be used for any child during instruction or for various reasons, but at times, a blank graphic organizer may be part of a child's specialized plan and may require specific qualification and approval for use on state assessments, for example. If your child receives special education services or has a Section 504 Plan, check with your child's case manager, coordinator, or campus, or check their Individualized Educational or Accommodation Plan for details as to which accommodations are included for classroom and state assessments for your child.
